    The rise of policy coherence for development: a multi-causal approach

    In recent years policy coherence for development (PCD) has become a key principle in international development debates, and it is likely to become even more relevant in the discussions on the post-2015 sustainable development goals. This article addresses the rise of PCD on the Western donors’ aid agenda. While the concept already appeared in the work of Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in the early 1990s, it took until 2007 before PCD became one of the Organisation’s key priorities. We adopt a complexity-sensitive perspective, involving a process-tracing analysis and a multi-causal explanatory framework. We argue that the rise of PCD is not as contingent as it looks. While actors such as the EU, the DAC and OECD Secretariat were the ‘active causes’ of the rise of PCD, it is equally important to look at the underlying ‘constitutive causes’ which enabled policy coherence to thrive well

    In January 1994 the Zapatista movement in southern Mexico inaugurated a new era of media use for dissent. Since that time, an array of dissenting collectives and individuals have appropriated media technologies in order to make their voices heard or to articulate alternative identities. From Zapatista media to the Arab Spring, social movements throughout the world are taking over, hybridizing, recycling, and adapting media technologies. This new era poses a new set of challenges for academics and researchers in the field of Communication for Social Change (CfSC). Based on examples from Mexico, Lebanon, and Colombia, this article highlights and discusses four such research challenges: accounting for historical context; acknowledging the complexity of communication processes; anchoring analysis in a political economy of information and communication technologies; and positioning new research in relation to existing knowledge and literature within the field of communication and social change.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline

    The translation of articles from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child into education legislation:the narrowing of Article 12 as a consequence of translation

    This paper is concerned with the inclusion, exclusion and reshaping of articles within the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) as they are translated into English education legislation. The CRC comprises 54 articles aimed at outlining rights and freedoms for children and was ratified by the United Kingdom (UK) government in 1991. The paper builds on a previous publication by the authors which highlighted how the mobilisation of articles within the CRC into professional practice undergoes multiple translations. This paper takes an in‐depth and critical look at the first stage of the translation process in which articles are mobilised from the CRC into national legislation. Specifically, the paper presents findings from a documentary analysis which explored the translation of principles pertaining to Article 12 of the CRC into English Education Regulations, Acts and Statutory Guidance for schools. Findings demonstrate that the reshaping of the article within education legislation strongly reflects the government's priorities and agendas. The study raises new insights into the need to establish processes to ensure the full mobilisation of Article 12 and questions whether specific principles pertaining to the article could or should be incorporated into national legislative systems.Output Status: Forthcoming/Available Onlin

    Anxiety Levels in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder:A Meta-Analysis

    The aim of the current study was to meta-analytically examine whether anxiety levels in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are elevated. A total of 83 articles were selected from a systematic literature search and were included in the meta-analyses. Results demonstrated that children with ASD had higher anxiety levels compared to typically developing children, and this difference increased with IQ. Youth with ASD also tended to have higher anxiety levels compared to clinically referred children, and this difference increased with age. Children with ASD had higher anxiety levels compared to youth with externalizing or developmental problems, but not when compared to youth with internalizing problems. The study findings highlight the importance of more research in order to fully understand the nature and development of anxiety in children with ASD. More specifically, the results suggest that especially high-functioning adolescents with ASD may be at risk for developing anxiety disorders. Selecting “View/Open” below will launch the full-text article in another browser window.MDC1 (mediator of DNA damage checkpoint protein 1) regulates the recognition and repair of DNA double strand breaks in mammalian cells through its interactions with nuclear foci containing the COOH-terminally phosphorylated form of the histone variant, H2AX. Here we demonstrate that the tandem BRCT repeats of MDC1 directly bind to the phosphorylated tail of H2AX-Ser(P)-Gln-Glu-Tyr, in a manner that is critically dependent on the free carboxylate group of the COOH-terminal Tyr residue. We have determined the x-ray crystal structure of the MDC1 BRCT repeats at 1.45 Angstroms resolution. By a comparison with the structure of the BRCA1 BRCT bound to a phosphopeptide, we suggest that two arginine residues in MDC1, Arg(1932) and Arg(1933) may recognize the COOH terminus of the peptide as well as the penultimate Glu of H2AX, while Gln(2013) may provide additional specificity for the COOH-terminal Tyr

    Competing magnetic interactions in the graphite-intercalation compound Li0.25Eu1.95C6

    International audienceWe present an extensive study of the magnetic properties of the new intercalation compound Li0.25Eu1.95C6 Performed by dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, muon-spin and Mossbauer spectroscopy measurements as a function of temperature. The experimental results indicate that the magnetic behaviour of this compound is determined by the competition between magnetic inter- and intro-cluster correlations. The former are mainly due to ferromagnetic-like exchange interactions between Eu spins located between two graphene planes (at high temperature) or surrounding them (at low temperature). The latter correlations, instead, seem to arise from low-temperature antiferromagnetic-like exchange interactions between small magnetic intercalated domains (SMIDs)
